Mechanical failure: Imaging cracks in hostile regimes.

چکیده
Our understanding of the physical world has progressed hand in hand with our ability to observe it. For instance, computer tomography (CT) — which was originally developed for medical imaging — has been instrumental in the non-destructive testing of materials. In CT, a digital three-dimensional replica of the object under observation is reconstructed from hundreds or thousands of twodimensional projections (radiographs) collected at different illumination angles using X-rays, neutrons or other penetrating wave beams. Because the images are collected non-destructively, CT can be applied repeatedly to follow how the structure of a material changes over time. In fact, it is now possible to MECHANICAL FAILURE

Real-time quantitative imaging of failure events in materials under load at temperatures above 1,600 °C.
Ceramic matrix composites are the emerging material of choice for structures that will see temperatures above ~1,500 °C in hostile environments, as for example in next-generation gas turbines and hypersonic-flight applications. The safe operation of applications depends on how small cracks forming inside the material are restrained by its microstructure. As with natural tissue such as bone and ...
متن کاملThe Analysis of Wheel Loader Diesel Engine Crankshaft Failure
The main purpose of this study is to review the cause for the crankshaft failure of six-cylinder diesel engine of a wheel loader after passing a short period of time. The failure had occurred after 4800 hours of in-service in the fifth crankpin of the crankshaft. Hardness and tensile tests were carried out to study their mechanical properties. Spectrophotometer machine was used to examine the c...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effectiveness of a Composite Patch on Repairing Pipes Subjected to Circumferential Cracks under Combined Loadings
The purpose of this study is to investigate bending moment and the axial load capacity of a pressurized pipe suffering from a through-wall circumferential crack repaired by a composite sleeve. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was adopted to compute the results, and the failure assessment diagram (FAD) was employed to investigate the failure behavior of the repaired pipe. The fi...
متن کاملLife Estimate of a Compressor Blade through Fractography
Failure analysis of fractured components provides some information about the causes and conditions of fracture. Fractography is an indispensable part of the failure analysis as it is usually the only means by which the failure mechanism can be established. By using fractography, some information such as component’s life, values of the stress intensity factor and the applied stress can be calcul...
متن کاملExperimental and finite-element free vibration analysis and artificial neural network based on multi-crack diagnosis of non-uniform cross-section beam
Crack identification is a very important issue in mechanical systems, because it is a damage that if develops may cause catastrophic failure. In the first part of this research, modal analysis of a multi-cracked variable cross-section beam is done using finite element method. Then, the obtained results are validated usingthe results of experimental modal analysis tests. In the next part, a nove...
